Nothing breeds success like success

I’ve shown this video a number of times during my lectures on “The 7 faces of Happiness”.

What it suggests to me are two important things:

1. How important school is to a child/student.

2. How giving students success really promotes more success.

School should be a positive, warm place. A place a student wants to be.

Especially in our language classes, classes where we gain a “skill”, we need our students constantly experiencing success. It is a HUGE motivator. Plus, it gives students an emotional attachment to the subject – something that will carry on outside the classroom.

I think we all went into things later in life – because we had some success at it when we were young. We felt that feeling which comes when you are finally pedaling by yourself, down the open road.

I think all language teachers need a constant reminder to make things simpler and easier. Plan to give your students success – don’t just let it happen by accident! It can make a life long difference.

You make a good point, David. Nevertheless, don’t over-praise or make things too simple or they’ll see right through you and eventually think you’re making fun of them.

    Adam,

Good that you mention that. Simplifying does not mean “stupifying” or as Einstein say, “simplify as much as possible but no further”.

As so much in teaching, it is all how it is done.
