The Bridge: A fantastic video lesson

This is a beautiful animated short that teaches students a great lesson about conflict resolution and getting along with others.

1. Watch the video and stop at 18 sec and 2:10.  Both times, ask students what they think will happen. What the animals will do.  Alternatively, you can stop along and ask students what they think the animals are saying.

2. Provide the roleplay writing sheet. Ask students in pairs or groups to write out the dialog as you play and pause the video. Download the role play writing sheet

3. Get some groups to perform the play for the class!  Have some fun.

4. Ask students what they think the moral / lesson of the story is. Come up with some sentences.

Extension: I love this “How does the man get everyone across the river” exercise. Get students to cut up the figures and try to figure it out. Instructions/story in the handout.

Thank you for the great lesson material!

If your class is at a fairly beginner level, instead of using such an open-ended dialog worksheet, use a fill-in-the-blank scheme. Or you can provide sample dialog sentences that the students can choose from and assign to different animals, or simply put them in the correct order.

Oh yes, please modify for lower levels or provide support. That’s a good suggestion. Provide the sentences and students chose and order.
