Wisdom to Teachers – What it’s “mostly” about….

I recently came across two items that profoundly, profoundly “hit me”. Meaning, they spoke to me as an educator about our true calling, our true place in the world. I’ll leave it for these authors to tell more.

The first is a wonderful essay, “To New Teachers: The graduation speech you won’t hear but should”

The second is this speech by Michael Jackson. With text, so it might be useful for some of your students. Eloquent and profound. Full text here.
He mentions the Children’s Universal Bill of Rights – I would ask, as educators are we fulfilling them?

1. The right to be loved without having to earn it

2. The right to be protected, without having to deserve it

3. The right to feel valuable, even if you came into the world with nothing

4. The right to be listened to without having to be interesting

5. The right to be read a bedtime story, without having to compete with the evening news

6. The right to an education without having to dodge bullets at schools

7. The right to be thought of as adorable – (even if you have a face that only a mother could love).

If you consider the ideas of these authors important – you will get sustenance from the writings of Nel Noddings.

Michael Jackson – All his songs with lyrics for learning English!

Michael Jackson will never die! I truly believe that and when we commit to excellence, no matter what else our manner, a part of us will live forever. Michael Jackson touched eternity and we will enjoy his genius forever and anon.

I’ve traveled and taught English around the world. Wherever I was, I could count on one thing — being able to talk about the music of Michael Jackson. He truly was an idol, an icon everywhere and everyone, no matter their language knew a smattering of Michael’s songs. He brought us together and was truly an international “teacher” of English.

In his honor and to maybe get your students to “taste his music”, I’ve created a few nice Mix Tube playlists. If you missed it on “Websites of the Day” – here they are again.
